Seishin-do Karate Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some popular questions that we are asked on a frequent basis. We hope you find these answers useful and if you feel there should be additional questions listed below, then please let us know.

How do I get started?

There is no need to book as we take new students all year round, so come along to a club session where the instructor will be able to provide a welcome pack with more details.

FIRST LESSON IS FREE. As most people are not sure what karate entails you can take advantage of a free class to see if karate is for you.

We aim to foster a friendly and safe environment where children thrive.

What do I wear?

Don’t worry about equipment. You just need to wear something comfortable and loose fitting. Karate is practiced in bare feet.

Karate suits are available from your instructor.

How often can I grade?

Gradings take place after 3 months if students have attended the required number of lessons and have achieved the necessary skill level.

Will I Need Insurance?

As with all martial arts you will need to purchase an annual licence. You will receive a hard backed book with a unique number, this will act as your record of karate achievement and will stay with you through your karate career. This will make you a registered member and as such cover your insurance requirements. More information is available from an instructor.

What Happens In The Lesson?

Warm Up: General fitness work and body weight exercises

To get the body warmed up and prepared for exercise

Stretch: Flexibility work to stretch and loosen off
Kihon:

Basic karate techniques practiced individually. Blocks, kicks punches

The fundamental building blocks of good Karate

Kata: Longer sequence’s of moves changing speed and direction. Students have to remember Kata’s and perform them individually on gradings
Application: Partner work to show how techniques actually work. This is only done at higher belts or when students are responsible enough to work with a partner
Kumite: This is the fighting side of karate and is “touch only”. Again this only applies to higher grades or responsible students. Students must show control of techniques and behaviour
Cool Down: Children’s classes end with a game

How Do I Join?
